What is search engine optimization (SEO)?
It's all well and good to have a web site on the internet, but unless you have
done your marketing you will not have any visitors to your web site. Optimization
involves adjusting a web site so that search engines can see it better. This results
in higher rankings in the search engines, which will bring you more traffic and more
customers. The benefits of opimization are long term. Results do not happen right
away, instead over time you will find your ranking increasing.
What does optimization involve?
Optimization can be done to your site, once complete you may notice that the
site looks exactly the same. It takes place behind the scenes. When a search engine
looks at your site, it does not see what we see instead it looks at the coding (like
"The Matrix").
The major tasks that need to be done for optimization (which a search engine
looks at) is:
- site content
- meta title
- meta description
- meta keywords
- alt tags
- page links (coming in/going out)
- navigation
- source code
- heading text
The above might not mean much to a beginner, but they are very important for good
rankings in the search engines. You can use ppc (pay per click) campaigns which will
get you instant paid traffic. Alternatively you can optimize your site to receive
good rankings in the search engines. Once this is achieved it is like receiving free
traffic which will reduce your expenses and increase your traffic and revenue.
There are some great tools around to help with optimization, some of these can be
